Cytomorphologic Criteria:
Cells with keratinized cytoplasm, slight nuclear enlargement and hyperchromasia ("atypical parakeratosis") interpretation as LSIL is based on nuclear features.
Explanatory Notes:
"Parakeratosis" is a descriptive term used for abnormal keratinization of the cytoplasm but it is not an interpretation and is not part of the Bethesda terminology. "Parakeratotic" changes may be seen in cells without nuclear abnormalities and in SIL.
