Interpretation:
NILM: Histiocytes
Cytomorphologic Criteria: Histiocytes. These cells have moderate, often vacuolated cytoplasm and kidney shaped to oval vesicular nuclei. Nucleoli may be seen. They can be multinucleated
Explanatory Notes: Multinucleated histiocytes are frequently observed in cervical cytology specimens and can be associated with chronic inflammatory processes. They may also be numerous in specimens from post menopausal women in the absence of inflammation, and can also be seen post-partum.
