Atlas Interpretation:
Type of Preparation: SurePath/ LBP
Magnification: High
Clinical History: 70 year old female
Adequacy Description:
Satisfactory squamous cellularity. NILM (Atrophy).
Cytomorphologic Criteria: Satisfactory squamous cellularity is present in this SurePath specimen. Liquid based preparations with atrophy show less nuclear enlargement than conventional smears due to improved fixation and cleaner background than in conventional smears. An adequate liquid based preparation should have an estimated minimum of 5,000 well-visualized/preserved squamous cells.
Explanatory Notes: The transformation zone component(s) may be difficult to assess in atrophy, as parabasal cells may resemble metaplastic cells. In such cases, the laboratory may elect to make a comment about the difficulty of assessing the transformation zone component.
