Clinical History: 35 year old woman with history of an abnormal Pap at another institution
Interpretation:
endocervical adenocarcinoma in situ, intestinal type (AIS)
Cytomorphologic Criteria: Cluster of abnormal glandular cells with nuclear crowding and overlap, elongated nuclei, and inconspicuous nucleoli. Note numerous goblet-type cells.
Explanatory Notes: Although uncommon, variant patterns of AIS exist (e.g., intestinal, endometrioid, clear cell) and may show morphologic features that differ from those seen in the "classic" endocervical form.
