Air Drying Artifact
Cytomorphologic Criteria: Note pale, enlarged nuclei with indistinct nuclear features.
Explanatory Notes: Air drying causes cells to flatten out on the slide instead of being fixed in a more round or 3-dimensional configuration. Extensive air drying may mean that a specimen is unsatisfactory (if >75% of cells show air drying). If less extensive, air drying may be mentioned as a quality indicator.
Follow-up: Note no epithelial abnormality is identified here.
