Interpretation:
NILM: Endocervical cells
Cytomorphologic Criteria: Cluster of endocervical cells from high in the endocervical canal on a liquid based preparation. Seen en face, cells may mimic squamous metaplastic cells. Note 2 columnar shaped cells to left. Interpretation is NILM.
Explanatory Notes: Normal endocervical cells from the upper region of the endocervical canal can mimic squamous metaplastic cells.
Follow-up: The presence of either glandular or metaplastic cells is an indication that the transformation zone has been sampled, a quality indicator for cervical cytology specimens (a minimum of 10 well-preserved endocervical or metaplastic cells is required; they do not need to be in groups)
