Type of Preparation:

Clinical History:
32 year old woman

NILM: Endocervical cells

Cytomorphologic Criteria:
Cluster of endocervical cells from high in the endocervical canal on a liquid based preparation. Seen en face, cells may mimic squamous metaplastic cells. Note 2 columnar shaped cells to left. Interpretation is NILM.

Explanatory Notes:
Normal endocervical cells from the upper region of the endocervical canal can mimic squamous metaplastic cells.

The presence of either glandular or metaplastic cells is an indication that the transformation zone has been sampled, a quality indicator for cervical cytology specimens (a minimum of 10 well-preserved endocervical or metaplastic cells is required; they do not need to be in groups)
